Start with the following in a pot:
1 pound (450 g) of sweet Italian sausage
1 pound (450 g) of ground beef
1/2 cup (120 mL) of chopped onions
2 cloves of garlic chopped
The flavor of the Italian sausage varies from brand to brand. You may need to try a different brand the first couple of times you cook this dish. Find the flavor you like the best.

Brown the ground beef, Italian sausage, onions and garlic in a pot until they start to cook. It takes about 6 to 9 minutes to brown the meat. I like to use a Dutch oven to cook this portion of the recipe. I use a medium low temperature to brown the meat. It is optional to remove the grease from the meat once it is finished browning, your choice.

Add the following:
1 (28 ounce) (784 g) can of crushed tomatoes
2 (8 ounce) (230 g) cans of tomato sauce
2 (6 ounce) (168 g) cans of tomato paste
1/2 (120 mL) cup of water
Gently stir this into the cooking meat.

Add the following:
2 tablespoons (30 mL) white sugar
1 teaspoon (5 mL) fennel seed
2 teaspoons (10 mL) fresh Basil leaves chopped
2 tablespoons (30 mL) fresh Italian parsley chopped
1 teaspoon (5 mL) salt
1 teaspoon (5 mL) Italian Seasoning
1/2 teaspoon (2.5 mL) ground pepper
Gently stir these seasoning into the sauce.

Cover the pot and let the meat sauce simmer. Simmer on low heat for 1 hour and 30 minutes. This is the ideal simmer time but not mandatory. If you don’t have time it will still be great after one hour of simmering.
I will sometimes make this sauce and refrigerate it after it finishes simmering. I will use the meat sauce the next day to put the rest of this recipe together. For some reason Italian meat sauce taste even better the next day. But that’s up to you.

Soak 12 lasagna noodles.
The lasagna noodles need to be soaked in hot tap water for 15 minutes.
While the noodles are soaking you can make the cheese filling.

Put the following in a mixing bowl:
23 ounces (644 g) of ricotta cheese.
1/2 teaspoon (2.5 mL) fresh grated nutmeg
Grate fresh nutmeg over the Ricotta cheese.

Add the following:
1 egg
2 tablespoons (30 mL) fresh Italian parsley chopped
Mix these ingredients together with a spoon

Now we start building the lasagna layers.
Use a 9×13 inch baking pan.
Spread 2 Cups (480 mL) of meat sauce on the bottom of the pan.

Remove your lasagna noodles out of the water bath. Shake water off wet noodles.
Lay 6 noodles across the layer of sauce.

Spread half of the ricotta cheese mixture over the layer of noodles.

Spread 1/2 of the mozzarella cheese over the ricotta layer.
Sprinkle half of the Parmesan cheese over the mozzarella layer

Spread 2 cups (480 mL) of meat sauce over the cheese layer
Lay down the next layer of noodles
Spread the remaining ricotta mixture over noodles
Spread the mozzarella and Parmesan cheeses saving some cheese for the top of the lasagna
Put the last layer of meat sauce on the cheeses
Sprinkle the remaining cheese on top.
It should look similar to the picture above.

Cover with foil
Bake in preheated oven at 350 F (177 C) for 25 minutes
Remove foil and bake uncovered for another 25 minutes.

Remove from oven and allow to cool for approximately 15 minutes.

Making this recipe for the first time for Christmas Eve dinner (we are Italian so that is what we traditinally eat). However, it is MY first time hosting. :O. With such great reviews I am certain of a favorable outcome. Thanks in advance!

Glad you had better results with this way of preparing your noodles Trae. Happy eating!
Nov 04, 2011 @ 21:35:47
AMAZING! I love that you soak the noodles in a water bath. They are much better that way. I was always boiling them to death. LOL or buying the no bake ones. This is for sure a better way! Thank you!!

This was my first time making lasagna and it came out amazing! I used spicy Italian sausage instead of sweet and I took the skins off. This sauce is so delicious! I don’t think I will ever buy canned sauce again. If you haven’t tried making this then do it soon. Your taste buds will thank you.

Oh wow. This lasagna was wonderful. Last recipe I used ending up being so dry ! I was parched during the entire meal. This was perfectly juicy and wonderful. Added 1tsp of nutmeg instead of 1/2. I live in France and used Toulouse sausage. Couldn’t find italian seasoning so I used half tsp of dry basilic and half tsp of oregano I had on hand. Used a bigger pan- 10×14 and it bubbled over slightly when cooking. I didn’t mind as the end result was superb. Easily serves 8-9 people.. Will definitely make it again! Thanks for the recipe.

This is the best and easiest lasagna recipe I’ve ever encounter in my life. Definitely I will try to make one of this and I can’t help myself to get excited this coming weekend.

I made this when I knew I had company coming. Easy and fabulously delicious. Big-time crowd pleaser recipe. Everyone should try this recipe! I made this a second time and got a little creative. (although the original recipe is wonderful) I used 3 Tbsp brown sugar instead of the white, added a half cup of Pinot Grigio & used 1/4 tsp of hot red pepper instead of the black. My husband & I love it and I’ve been making it ever since. (this sauce is wonderful just over pasta too) Thanks!!!

Thanks for the feedback Corey. We’re so happy your meal was a success. There’s nothing like a great lasagna dish with some fine wine! I’m hungry just thinking about it.
Sep 06, 2011 @ 19:23:29
I’ve used this recipe for years. I love it. People tell me I shouldn’t cook heavy foods in the summer, so I wait for the first windy days of fall, and unleash my lasagna. I just google Lasagna Recipe and always find this page.
I made another batch tonight for a French family and I think it was the best ever. We went through two bottles of some of their finest wine and the old man was so happy with the meal he offered me some of his 40 year old cognac. What a success!
Stick with this recipe Friends, it won’t let you down. Thank you!

I’ve made this several times now using the bread loaf pan so I can make two lasagna instead of one giant one (there’s only two of us). I usually prepare one for baking right away and the other one I freeze for later. Well, the sauce is excellent. I double the sauce in freeze it in containers for pasta, spaghetti, meatball sandwiches, anything and everything else I come up with. It is just that good. Thanks to your recipe, my husband is complaining about his waistline getting a little bit tighter!

The mixture of both beef and sausage looks great. Thanks for sharing your take on lasagna.

I made this lasagna for a potluck and thus went gluten-free. While the rice noodle part would need a revision in the future, everything else about the recipe including the minor changes I made for personal preference made for another fantastic lasagna. Love your recipe — highly recommended. Thank you again!!

I prepared your lasagna recipe for a potluck and thus did it gluten-free. I’ll need to tweak the noodle prep for gluten-free in the future, but that and minor changes to the sauce for personal taste preference (can you ever have too much basil?) and the lasagna came out great — again. A fantastic recipe, highly recommended!! Thank you!

Great recipe! I use 5 cheeses in mine, ricotta, cottage cheese, parmesan, mozzarella and a little cheddar. However, I need a larger pan. The one I use is 9×13, but its not deep enough! Thank-you for sharing.
May 27, 2011 @ 09:38:18

Every body acknowledges that our life is not cheap, but we require money for various issues and not every person earns enough money. So to get good business loans and just collateral loan would be a correct solution.

I have made this several times over the last year, and everyone LOVES it. I do it a little differently though, I use 1 lb gound meat and 1 lb hot chorizo. The chorizo comes in a sleeve (2 per pkg from Aldi’s). This is one of the few items I buy from Aldi’s, but I can’t seem to find it this way anywhere else. Even my pre teen daughter LOVES it, when she found out what was in it, she didn’t care (usually she is VERY picky). She asks me to make it often. Over Thanksgiving last year I made 4 trays to feed my family and they were gone almost before everyone was served. LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this recipe. Thank you so much!!

I made this today and it was a huge hit. I used fresh whole wheat lasagna sheets and made the following substitutions in the meat sauce due to what ingredients I had or thought work work well.
Instead of 1/2 cup water, I used 1/2 cup of Shiraz/Grenache red wine and 2 tbsps of water.
Tomato Paste: 1 x 13 oz can
Tomato Sauce: 1 x 13 oz can
I did need to add another tablespoon of sugar to balance the bitterness but it worked beautifully.
Cheese: I used to the Italian grated cheese mix from Kraft
